Campylobacter is a bacterial infection that causes food poisoning that is somewhat common in puppies. It is estimated that as many as 49 percent of dogs carry the bacteria in their gut. Symptoms of campylobacter include fever, vomiting, loss of appetite, and swollen lymph nodes. Animals become infected with the bacteria when they come in contact with feces from an infected animal, or when they eat food or water that has been contaminated.
The FDA regulates pet food, both wet and dry varieties as well as treats. The regulations spelled out in the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act are similar to the regulations for other animal foods, requiring it be safe to eat, be produced in a sanitary environment under sanitary conditions, be free of harmful substances, and be honestly labeled with what it contains. These regulations help reduce the occurrence of Campylobacter. Canned pet foods contain an additional regulation, requiring that they be compliant with the low-acid canned food regulations to ensure they are free of microorganisms.
