Microbe Monday – 4/23/18
Here we go again! Time for another #MicrobeMonday!
Today’s microbe:
- is a bacteria
- is an obligate intracellular parasite
- many “species” of the bacteria exist
- the species have genomes between 1.0 and 1.3 megabases in length
- encode 900-1050 proteins
- is found in elementary body form and reticulate body form
- infections do not often cause symptoms
- can be detected through culture and nonculture tests such as: fluorescent monoclonal antibody, enzyme immunoassay and DNA probes
- most likely shares an ancestor with cyanobacteria
- has plant-like traits
- 1.59 million cases of the disease cause by this microbe are reported every year
